PORTLETHEN Library this week launched a Heritage Corner, in a bid to encourage local residents to become more involved with the history of their community.
Staff at the library have been working in partnership with Portlethen's self-styleed 'Local Heritage Mannie', Fred Stewart, to gather information and create a section in the library which focuses on the town's history.
The heritage corner already b
oasts a wealth of information about the area, from local families, the fishing community and the Barons of Portlethen, as well as local links with Robert Burns. Contributions have been made by local schoolchildren, and the library is keen for everyone on the community to take an interest.
As well as encouraging Portlethen residents to visit the heritage section, Network Librarian Carol Love is hoping that locals will come forward to contribute to the collection in order to preserve the town's history.
She said: "As Portlethen is constantly changing we feel it's important to record it's history and this is what we're attempting to do.
"I hope that the people of Portlethen contribute to this section in order to build on the available resources and ensure its success.
"Old photographs, documents or even memories would be welcome additions which we would gratefully receive and hold for all the community to access."
Librarian Marjory MacPherson said: "We came up with the idea to coincide with the Year of the Homecoming. We're always searching for information on things like this and there's nothing in the area like it.
"We're hoping people might come along with photos or information about the area."
Mrs Love stressed that she will copy any materials that are submitted and return the originals to the owner, and all formats of information are welcome.
