Camera Club slide competition

Mearns Camera Club’s annual Slide Competition was judged on Monday night at their weekly meeting, in Stonehaven Community Centre.

The judge was Sandy Porter an old friend of the club. He reflected on the decline of the slide, and slide competitions in the light of the digital age and was glad the club still had this competition as there was a special skill set needed for using film.

He did add some of the entries had ‘historical’ content. He also said that the best of the entries were very good indeed and there were seven or eight that could have been given his top mark. In the end it just came down to personal preference.

He was thanked by long standing club member Alan Gawthorpe who also regretted the passing of the slide era as this was his particular forte too. Alan commented on Sandy’s immaculate presentation and mainly positive comments.

Slide Competition: 3rd ‘AJAX’ by Martin Sim 18 points; 2nd ‘Bruge At Night’ by Eric Swan 19 points; 1st ‘Steam At Night’ by Neal Weston 20 points.

The Club are delighted to have recently won the Bon Accord Print Challenge. In a three way contest between Mearns, Bon Accord and Peterhead, they emerged victorious with 252 points to Bon Accord’s 247 and Peterhead’s 221.

Each club had 15 images in the competition, chosen from club members. It is particularly pleasing to note that club member Pat Copner had two entries that were awarded the top mark of 20 points by the judges. These were ‘Forth Mist’ and ‘Winter Walk’

Next Monday the club is running a Studio Workshop session. Members are encouraged to bring along their cameras and try out various aspects of photography such as ‘Portraiture’ and ‘Still Life with tuition from experienced club members on hand.
