Viscount retires as Sea Cadet president

Lord Arbuthnott (John Campbell Arbuthnott, 16th Viscount of Arbuthnott, KT CBE DSC) has recently retired as the President of Stonehaven & District Sea Cadet Unit after some 35 years service to the Corps and in particular to the Unit. Lord Arbuthnott was elected the second ever Unit President in 1976 following on from the Earl of Kintore who was appointed in 1956.

During his term he has always supported the Unit to the hilt and was extremely active during the chairmanship of Tom Campbell which encompassed the Unit’s 50th anniversary in 2004 when he attended many functions and events to represent the Unit and he lent his name to the specially commissioned paintings for the a Unit fundraising appeal.

A quiet man who was not one to interfere but offer his respected advice and support when required. He would always sit back, listen to the debate and then offer his advice using his keen humour which 10 times out of 10 always was the correct approach to take!

Lord Arbuthnott, as the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, was the VIP who inspected the Northern Area Sea Cadets at the last Royal Review held in the grounds of the Palace of Holyrood in 1986.

During World War II, Lord Arbuthnott served in the near and Far East and Pacific theatre (1944–1945) with the RNVR - the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) in 1945.

The new President of the Unit is Mr John DB Smart CVO who is a former Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire and has served as a Vice President of the Unit for a number of years.
