WORK is expected to begin any day now on the construction of a permanent home at Stonehaven Harbour for the Office Maritime Rescue Section of Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology.
The project, expected to cost in the region of £250,000, has been made necessary in order to satisfy an increasing demand for the centre's services.

Tougher measures could be on the way to try and curb Grampian Region's mounting bill for va
ndalism repairs – currently costing around £4,000 per week – to the authority's property.
Meeting on Tuesday, the Region's education committee agreed with a special sub-committee report that parents should be made liable for damage caused.
An approach is to be made to the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities, requesting that body to consider the need for introduction of such legislation.

STONEHAVEN Town Council are to hold a special meeting to discuss repairs to and preventative measures at the beach.
At Tuesday evening's meeting, Councillor Charles Leiper, spoke on a motion, of which he had given notice the previous month, and said: "As you will perhaps recollect, in my address to the electors of Stonehaven, I promised that I would put forward a motion, in this Chamber, for the provision on a long-term basis, of a new promenade.
"I think that all of us here are aware that this is almost a necessity if we are to survive as a holiday resort, as this is the largest single source of income to Stonehaven and one which we cannot afford to lose."
As engineers had not provided a revised estimate for the scheme, the council was as yet unable to ask the Scottish Office for a contribution.
Therefore, Mr Leiper put forward a list of possible initiatives in an effort to raise part of the funds required.
Hon. Treasurer W. D. Gall said that, in his opinion, the motion warranted a special meeting and on the motion of Councillor J. M. C. Mackie, seconded by Councillor Moncrieff, it was agreed that such a meeting should be convened.

ANOTHER instance of the inconvenience caused by the dual management of the Beach was shown at the Council meeting when they had to decline an offer of £5 for liberty to place three weighing machines on the Promenade.
The reason for refusing the offer was that the proprietor must first give his consent.
The absurdity of the situation lies in the fact that after the proprietor has given consent the Council may refuse theirs and stop further progress.
It would be well that some definite understanding was come to so that the Council could deal at once with such applications.

It is rumoured that after this week the North British Railway lorries will be withdrawn from Stonehaven and that the company will stop taking up and delivering goods here.
There has been talk of economy by the leading railway companies and this is evidently a step in that direction.
