STONEHAVEN'S £630,000 sports complex which is near Queen Elizabeth Park, was officially "dubbed" Stonehaven Leisure Centre at Thursday's meeting of the district council's leisure/recreation committee.
Two other possible titles were considered – Kincardine and Deeside Leisure Centre and Queen Elizabeth Leisure Centre – but after a debate and vote, it was the straightforward-sounding name that was agreed on.

WHEN "auld toon" baker Mr Les
lie Aitken was forced to give up work for a while in 1968 because of a back complaint, his wife Hilda started doing the shop's daily van rounds – taking pies, sausage rolls, cakes etc., throughout Stonehaven and into the surrounding communities.
Hilda enjoyed the work so much, and folk became accustomed to listening for her van horn, that what was originally intended to be only a two-week spell behind the wheel stretched into 16 years!
But today is Hilda's last day on her rounds- for she has decided it's time to "give it a rest".

Friday November 27 1959

THE identity of Miss Ann Stephen, described as of Muchalls, who was left 10,000 dollars (£3,500) in the will of her grandfather, Bernard Berenson, famous New York art critic, has puzzled folk of the village and district.
Mr George Stephen, who was at one time a salmon fisherman at Muchalls and later in the Coastguard service at Stonehaven, and who now lives in retirement in Auchenblae, has no knowledge of the matter apart from what he has seen in newspapers, and is sure his family is not concerned.

MISS Diana Bowes-Lyon, the Queen's cousin, is back at Fettercairn House after a short spell in the south of France and London. Her sister and husband, Prince Georg and Princess Anne of Denmark, will be joining her later for a short holiday.

STONEHAVEN residents have been interested to read of the peanuts which have been washed up on beaches from Inverbervie to Montrose. These are reputed to have come from a vessel sunk off Gourdon during the war, and by this time they are not very pleasant "wreckage."
Four or five years ago Stonehaven got its share of the same commodity, and the entire beach was littered with odoriferous heaps of what had once been an edible article. It was quite a problem for the burgh surveyor and his staff to arrange for their disposal.

THE Premier Roller Skating Company is with us again, and proving an attraction in the Town Hall. But what has become of the proposed local rink at Cowie? It is time that a start was made if the promoters mean to catch the holidays.

THE Stonehaven Auction Company has decided to build new offices on the site of the old buildings close to the Mart, and they have also appointed Mr Stewart A. Smith, farmer, Pitdrechie, assistant manager. The removal of the offices will be an advantage to both customers and the staff, while Mr Smith's experience – both agricultural and clerical- should be of advantage to the company.
