A RESURGENCE in the popularity of cricket has resulted in the first tentative steps in the formation of a club at Newtonhill.
A three-man committee was set up last week to "get the ball rolling" at a meeting called to gauge enthusiasm for the proposal.

Despite having to compete with the Scotland v Spain world cup match live on television, the names of 22 people - aged f
rom 14 upwards - signified their intention to support the club by registering their names as founder members.

Stonehaven is not meantime to have a publicity and development association.

This was decided after a lengthy discussion at a public meeting in the Upper Town Hall, Stonehaven on Wednesday night. Between 50 and 60 people were present and when the meeting ended, Provost T Christie expressed his disappointment at the outcome.

Provost Christie said the Town Council had arrived at a position in which they were doing all they could to attract people to the town and that that was not enough. They were spending £250 per annum on advertising, and the feeling in the Council was that they should try and extend the summer season which, at the moment, was only about six weeks.

Novice rally navigators who had been receiving instruction from Mr Iain Smith, took part in a short road rally, the cars being driven by members of Stonehaven and District Motor Club.

The rally, which was devised by Mr Smith, covered a course of approximately 20 miles and gave his "pupils" an opportunity of practising what they had been taught. At the end Mr Smith gave a short explanation of the various methods which could have been used to cope with the navigation.

A very successful concert was given in Portlethen Jubilee Hall on Friday night by a number of the children attending the Public School. There was a very large attendance.

Mr James Findlay, Balquharn, in the absence of Mr Walker, Hillside, presided, and in a few remarks, introduced a highly attractive programme of drill, songs, dialogues, and recitations by the boys and girls, all of which were very highly appreciated.

The proceeds of the concert will be applied for the benefit of the School Library and the Soup Kitchen.

The Town Clerk read a communication bearing on the Cinematograph Act, from which it appeared that the Council could not let the hall for cinematograph entertainments unless certain conditions were complied with as to safety from fire.

Bailie Robertson said his understanding of the Act was that they must either put up a fireproof erection for the operator or stop it all together.

The matter was remitted to the Town Hall Committee.
