Aberdeen International Youth Festival (AIYF) has announced its full programme of events this week with a major show planned for Stonehaven Town Hall on Thursday August 4.
The announcement comes as the festival reveals that over one weekend alone during the event more than 1,300 performers will be in the city taking part in a variety of top class shows.
Confirming the full festival line-up, organisers said that performers will travel from across the world to take part in this year’s festival with participants from four continents including Asia, North America, Africa and Europe.
Young people from the North-east, Scotland and the rest of the UK will also take part in what is one of the biggest celebrations of youth art anywhere in the world.
Artistic director and chief executive of AIYF, Stewart Aitken, said: “This is one of the largest ever contingents of international groups and performers to descend on the city during festival time.”
The show at Stonehaven is billed as the “Stonehaven summer stushie” and will feature acts from Bahrain, Israel, and Africa as well as UK based bands such as ReSession who play Scottish traditional music, and Punch in the Dark who are a trad/folk band.
The festival takes place over ten days in the summer from Wednesday July 27 to Saturday August 6 and includes performances in many of the city’s most prestigious venues including His Majesty’s Theatre, the Music Hall and the Beach Ballroom.
Artists and groups will also make appearances at community centres, village halls and churches in rural areas around Aberdeenshire and Moray.
Councillor Jennifer Stewart, chair of the board of trustees for AIYF was at the launch event. She said: “This is a fantastic annual event that highlights all that is good about Aberdeen and the North-east. The impact that the festival has on the local arts and cultural scene is unparalleled and it provides a perfect backdrop for visitors coming to the region over the summer.”
Now in its 39th year AIYF is regarded as one of the world’s foremost celebrations of youth arts. More than 100 performances in music, dance and theatre are scheduled to take place over ten days with many of the world’s leading young artists taking part.
