Scene set for city musical performance

On August 11, Just Cause Productions are once again staging the 24-hour musical at Aberdeen Arts Centre.

Exactly one day before the curtain rises at 7:30pm at the Arts Centre the show will be announced and the production will go into overdrive, squeezing weeks and sometimes months of auditions, casting, rehearsals, costumes, make-up and scenery and prop sourcing into just 24 hours.

Helping Just Cause Productions through their daunting challenge, as well as their love for the theatre, will be the just cause they are supporting, with all profits from the venture to be donated to Castlegate Arts.

The cast and production team will take over and use as many areas of the Arts Centre as possible to squeeze in as much rehearsals as possible into the 24 hours.

Joanne Smith, a History teacher at Mackie Academy, has taken part in this unique experience three times before, not only as a performer in each show but also a producer.

She has played leading roles including Rizzo in Grease and Ado Annie in Oklahoma in previous years. This has meant she not only had the tough job of organising and producing the event, but had to learn a great deal of lines, songs and dances during it.

Joanne said, “The 24-hour musical is a unique experience that we are immensely proud of. Everyone works together to help each other through the night – it’s a real team effort. Rehearsing and staging a full production in 24 hours is an amazing achievement.

“The audience are always behind us 100% which helps a great deal. The 24-hour musical gives us a chance to put something back into the Arts Centre, a venue thy we regularly use for our main productions. The Arts Centre provides a great service for many amateur groups in Aberdeen and also does a great deal for young people in Aberdeen.”

In previous years Aberdeen’s 24-hour musical has seen productions of Anything Goes, Grease and Oklahoma so come and see what is sure to be an impressive rendition of a well-loved and classic musical, all in the name of charity.
