STONEHAVEN woman Lorna Kemp is hoping people in the Mearns will make a belated New Year's Resolution worth keeping by signing on to the NHS Organ Donor Register.
She wants others to benefit in the same way she did, when she received a kidney six years ago.
Lorna was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes at the age of 11 and started treatment on insulin which kept her diabetes well controlled for many years.
She
then married Andy in October 1996 and several years later the couple were ecstatic to discover that Lorna was pregnant.
Unfortunately as the pregnancy progressed, her kidneys were put under extreme pressure and six weeks before the baby was due, doctors decided to do an emergency caesarean in an attempt to save what little kidney function Lorna had left.
"My blood results were getting worse by the hour and the doctors needed to preserve what kidney function I had left," said Lorna.
"Thankfully my baby girl was fine but three years later my kidneys had failed to the extent that I needed to be on dialysis to do the work they could no longer perform".
Lorna was listed for a kidney transplant in October 2001 and incredibly just 10 days later she got the call she had been hoping for, much to her delight.
"Now I can do normal family things, whereas before my transplant sometimes I felt so ill I couldn't even get out of bed, said Lorna.
"I have the energy to play with and look after my daughter Erinn, no more dialysis, no more fluid restrictions. "Basically I have got my life back.
"I will always be eternally grateful to my donor and their family; words cannot thank them enough."
Lorna is acutely aware that whilst she was lucky enough to get her transplant, there are over 8000 people in the UK who desperately need an organ transplant to save or radically improve their lives.
Due to the chronic shortage of donors, 450 people die each year waiting and the growing demand for transplants means that waiting lists are getting steadily longer.
Now Lorna wants others to give thought to the benefits of being an organ donor and to sign up to the NHS register.
Those interested can do this online by visiting www.uktransplant.org.uk or by phoning the Organ Donor Line on 0845 60 60 400.
