PORTLETHEN will be lit up this Christmas, following the announcement that Portlethen Community Council have secured a £10,000 lottery grant which will pay for Christmas lights to decorate streets and buildings in the town.
Dorothy Main, who heads up a small sub-committee dedicated to the project, said that she is "absolutely delighted" with the news. The new lights will be hung along the length of Muirend Road and onto Cookston Road. Mrs Main said: "We're trying to tak
e in both entrances to Portlethen, the flyover and the new underpass. So the lights will join up the two roundabouts at each end of Muirend Road, and hopefully up towards Portlethen Primary School. This grant takes us a long way to setting up a long-term Christmas lights fund."
Mrs Mains said that the lack of Christmas lights in the town last year was very disheartening for many residents. She said: "Several people have commented how disappointing it was that there were no lights at all last year, so we are really chuffed that it will happen this year. In the dark winter days it will be nice to be lit up."
Gordon Munn, who is Chairman of Portlethen and District community council, praised his fellow community councillors Dorothy Main and Dorothy Foreman for their work in securing the grant. He said: "It's all thanks to the two Dorothy's, Dorothy Main and Dorothy Foreman, who have been doing all the hard work. It is very much appreciated by me and the rest of the community council."
Mrs Main said that the Christmas lights committee will continue to fundraise in an ongoing process which they hope will ensure the town continues to be lit up every year, and added that they hope to involve the whole community in the fundraising.
There will be a family quiz night in the Bourtree Hall on October 3 from 6.30pm-9.30pm, as well as an over-16's race night on November 28 to raise cash for the fund. Tickets are available from community councillors, whose contact details can be found on the PDCC website at www.pdcc.org.uk/
