STONEHAVEN Townswomen's Guild celebrated a momentous milestone this week, as members marked the organisation's 80th birthday.
But the day was overshadowed by fears that the group may have to close soon due to dwindling membership.
Around 40 guild members from the Stonehaven, Kincorth and Aberdeen South branches came together to share a birthday lunch at the Heugh Hotel on
Tuesday.
Chairperson Roberta Duncan said it was a very special day for the Stonehaven Guild.
She said: "I'm really happy that we have reached the 80 years because it is a great milestone, but I'm very sad at the same time if we have to fold. Not many organisations reach their 80th. "I think the guild means an awful lot to the people who come to it. The main thing is friendship - we get together on a Tuesday evening and for some people it is the only night that they will get out and meet people."
Mrs Duncan said that membership had dropped to about 20 regulars, down from a one-time peak of 70 or 80, and that changing social values and work patterns were responsible.
She said: "People commute to their work in Aberdeen now and by the time they come home they've got their families to see to. When the guilds first formed, women didn't go out to work. The younger people aren't that interested really, and the times have just changed - the guilds were originally set up to educate woman who didn't have the same opportunities as men."
Betty Topp, the longest serving member of the Stonehaven Guild after joining in 1961, said a lot of things had changed since she first became a member, but she still enjoyed the monthly meetings.
The guild meets on the first Tuesday of every month at the Invercarron Resource Centre at 7.30pm.
