A 12-HOUR session of darts reaped rewards for two local primary schools when £1,800 in sponsorship money was handed over last week.
Gourdon and Bervie primary schools were the beneficiaries of the 2009 'Dartathon'. The event, organised by Gourdon's Harbour Bar, was staged in April. Darts players competed for 12 hours and were sponsored for their endeavours. A collection was als
o held in the pub throughout the event. A total of £1,800 was raised and this was split equally between the two schools. On Friday they were presented with their cheques for £900 by Harbour Bar landlord Charles Dorward and darts team member Mark Beedie. Gourdon head teacher Sandra Japp said the money would be of great benefit to the school. "We will be using it to fund a six-week block of swimming lessons," she added. "We have just run them for one group and this will be used to pay for the other. "We also plan to use it for other improvements to the school, particularly the breakfast club. "We have been blown away by the generosity shown. Every child in the school will benefit from this money." Louise Simpson, acting depute head at Bervie Primary, said the extra funding would be used to purchase new resources. "We are looking at updating resources and sports equipment, including netball and football strips and running vests. "We really do appreciate the generosity shown and the money will be put to very good use. We are extremely grateful."
