A MEMBER of the Stonehaven Blind Bowlers group has been selected to represent Scotland in the 9th World Blind Bowls Championships.
Mary Lindsay, who is visually impaired and registered blind, will travel to Melbourne, Australia next April to compete in the mixed pairs event with fellow bowler Robert Conway, who is from Glasgow.
A team of ten Scottish bowlers, who are all eithe
r completely blind or visually impaired, will travel with their helpers to Australia to compete against twelve other countries in several singles and doubles competitions.
Mary was runner-up in the Scottish championships in 2005, and went on to take part in the British championships in 2006, before taking home the silver medal at the Scottish championships in August this year.
She said: "When I found out I had been selected I was elated. I'm nervous and at the same time I'm really looking forward to it. Robert and I worked well together at the trials. You just play the best you can. It's going to be a whole new experience."
Mary will be accompanied by her helper of the last four years, Helen Bartlett, who has been involved with the blind bowlers since her husband became a member.
She said: "It's absolutely marvellous that Mary has been selected. We get on like a house on fire. I'm just a jumble of nerves and excitement, but I'm really looking forward to it."
The two ladies have to raise £2,000 each to fund their trip, and they have been busy fundraising for several months. Mary explained that they have received a tremendous amount of support from the local community.
In one final push to reach their total, they will be holding a coffee morning at the Invercarron Resource Centre on Tuesday October 14 from 10am-11.30am. There will be a cake and candy stall, and a raffle.
As well as this, the Stonehaven Accordion Music Group are holding a fundraising concert on Saturday October 18, at 7.30pm in St Bridget's Hall.
Tickets for the event can be purchased from Giulianotti's on Evan Street, or call Mary on (01569) 763440 or Helen on (01674) 850372.
