PLANS FOR OLD RADIO STATION

CALLING all radio enthusiasts – supporters and funding are wanted to transform the former Stonehaven Radio Station into a multi-purpose community building.
Stonehaven resident Alistair Maclean has drawn up a series of suggestions based on the existing floor plan of the listed building.
What was the distinctive airport control tower-styled operating room becomes a 'Radio Restaurant', the officer in charge's office an internet café and the former transmitter room, a video theatre.
Other suggested uses include accommodation for the Mearns FM community radio station, media and band rooms and even space for a model railway.
Mr Maclean has been in touch with Telereal – the real estate arm of BT – who say they are willing to consider an offer for the site from a community body – providing they offer a realistic sum and can demonstrate they are able to pay for the building's refurbishment and subsequent running costs.
"There is funding for projects like this," said Mr Maclean. "It is difficult but not impossible. If people are willing, it can happen."
Stonehaven Radio Station, with its call sign GND, holds a unique position in maritime communications history – it was the last manned ship to shore radio station in the UK, ultimately providing cover and handling distress calls for the entire coastline.
When at noon on Friday June 30, 2000 the United Kingdom Coast Radio Station service closed down after over 100 years of aid to shipping, it was Stonehaven Radio that made the final announcement, bringing a proud, substantially unrecognised service to an end.
Mr Maclean said: "This radio station gave hope to thousands of people over the years.
"Although it doesn't look a lot, it is part of history."
The next step in the project for Mr Maclean is to inspect the almost dilapidated building with an architect, to evaluate repair costs before preparing a cost and feasibility study of the project.
Meanwhile, for inspiration he looks to the Ariel Music Centre near Ilfracome - housed in a building almost identical to Stonehaven's and now a state of the art recording facility and arts venue (see www.ariel.org.uk).
