AN under-threat day care service looks likely to win a reprieve despite fears that the axe could fall on its only form of transport.
The Inverbervie and District Day Care Centre believed new national rules, which will require all minibus drivers to apply for a new type of licence, would force it to close.
The volunteer-run centre has been providing social group outings to older
residents of
the Royal Burgh and surrounding area, including Kinneff, Arbuthnott, Gourdon, Johnshaven, Benholm and St Cyrus, for almost 20 years.
But last month members feared for the future as its volunteer drivers were told their licences would no longer be valid to drive council buses, used to ferry service users from their homes to the Bervie Church Centre every Thursday.
Secretary Joyce Gough appealed to Inverbervie Community Council and local elected members for help.
She said: "At the moment we have three regular drivers who have valid council licenses but in October we are told they will be invalid.
"New ones will cost £80 each, also the age limit has been lowered to 69. The day care drivers have always paid for their own licenses but our three drivers have all indicated they will not be taking the test as they are all in the 68 age group."
She said the increased cost would be prohibitive to new drivers coming forward and that one man had indicated he would be willing to assist, but could not afford the £80 cost as a volunteer.
"Our members are all in their late 80s or 90s, some are in wheelchairs. It is impossible to bring them in without the bus," Mrs Gough added.
"This will mean the closure of the centre which has been running for 20 years."
But this week Mearns councillor Jean Dick said she had contacted the social work department and it appeared a solution had been found.
She told Inverbervie Commuity Council members: "The group has now put in an application for the new driver training and they should get a grant to pay for it. The social work department has directed them to appropriate sources of funding."
