CARTIES thundered down Catterline's steep brae at speeds up to 30mph to bring the village's annual gala weekend to a thrilling end on Sunday.
A total of 27 carties took part in the event, now one of the highlights of the Mearns summer calendar. The track was laid out from the Creel Inn at the top, down the winding slope to the pier. The Catterline Cartie Challenge has gained a reputation
which extends well beyond Kincardineshire and daredevils from across the country turned up to test their gravity-powered creations. One of the racers suffered a mishap when his vehicle crashed and was taken to hospital with a suspected broken collar bone - he was in the ironically named Bruiser Cruiser. Organisers said the accident did not dampen spirits on the day and that the event had gone well. Gordon Ritchie said; "One competitor broke his collar bone but other than that everything ran very well and everyone enjoyed themselves. He is on the mend now I understand. "The weather stayed dry and bright all day and the harr stayed off which was a big help. "We also had a successful gala day on Saturday which attracted one of the biggest crowds we've ever had. "They enjoyed the various games and events in the field and the new scarecrow competition was popular, with around a dozen entries." The winners of this year's cartie race were The Cheats, from Stonehaven, who took both the Connons Shield for the Supreme Champion and the Constructors' title in The tequila MK 3. Two teams travelled more than 400 miles to take part - Belchford Beast, from Lincolnshire, entered the Belchford Endeavour while Team Tetford, also from Lincolnshire entered the Monster. They came ninth and 14th respectively. Catterline's own The Kniitting Club took the prize for best-decorated cartie and the Hair of Dog team from Ellon were given the award for best-engineered cartie. Mr Ritchie said the most unusual entry was named St Mary's and was decorated in the style of a church.
