There were tears aplenty at Stonehaven After-School Club last Thursday, when founder Phyllis Sinclair bid a fond farewell to staff and youngsters after 24 years at the helm.

Phyllis, affectionately known as ‘‘Chicken,’’ started the facility in 1990 when her own children were young, after discussing the problem of wrap-around care before and after school with other working mothers.

She left her post as a buyer for an oil company to take on the challenge, and hasn’t looked back since.

The club has gone from strength to strength, with a constant waiting list as demand is so high.

Phyllis said: “There were only two after-school clubs in the whole of Scotland when I started.

‘‘Now, of course, they are everywhere.

‘‘I really have to thank the Stonehaven community - everyone who attended the club or sent their children here - as well as local businesses who have been so supportive.

‘‘It means a lot to see how much people care.”
