Police are appealing for witnesses after thieves used explosives to break into an ATM machine at Tesco in Newtonhill.

Officers have said they are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who saw a dark grey-coloured estate car in the area in the days leading up to the incident.

The attack on the ATM is believed to have taken place in the early hours of Saturday, and nearby residents reported being woken by a loud bang.

The Newtonhill store was closed on Saturday morning while investigations were carried out, but was re-opened by the afternoon.

It has not yet been revealed how much the thieves made away with. The heist at Newtonhill comes after a similar incident at Morrisons in Banchory, when two ATMS at the entrance to the store were targeted in a similar manner, and more than £10,000 in cash was stolen.

Detective Inspector Stewart Mackie said: “Enquiries into this incident are still at an early stage and I’d urge anyone who may have been in the area or has any information to contact Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.”
