Aberdeenshire Council Shared Lives Scheme currently has a display in the Stonehaven library Window for the month of October.

Shared Lives Support Worker Ann Brodie, said that in planning for the window display she and a Shared Lives carer who helped with the display items, wanted to portray a visual effect whereby those looking at the display would recognise the caring qualities in themselves and want to become a Shared Lives carer.

The Shared Lives Carers in the scheme has a range of caring and personal attributes to support the adult they have been matched with. The scheme is currently recruiting carers who will be trained and supported by Aberdeenshire Council.

Shared Lives Carers are self-employed and they can work flexible hours to fit in with their lives.

The Shared Lives Scheme offers adults over the age of 16 years who have a disability, a mental health issue or dementia the chance to contribute to real friendships and become valued citizens with a sense of belonging and confidence in themselves.

The overall aim of the scheme is to provide an individual flexible needs led support and a respite service enabling people to live to the full in their community while allowing their family carers a short break from caring.

The Shared lives Scheme matches a person who requires extra support with the scheme's Shared Lives Carers who share the same hobbies and interests. The possibilities are endless with this match as each person decides what they want to achieve and we match them with someone who can support them to succeed.

The support is unique in that it is based in and around the Shared Lives Carers' home and community, sharing their lives together. This partnership is flexible and can range from a few hours during the day or evenings or at weekends, weekdays, to short breaks and longer placements.

If you can offer an adult with a disability a few hours respite or if you want more information about accessing the service contact the Shared Lives team call 07824837791 or e-mail sharedlives@aberdeenshire.gov.uk,
