Cyclists looking for a challenge in the North-east can redo, or undo – but “no do” just isn’t an option.
The Midsummer Beer Happening’s awesome cycling Sportive is back this June and aiming to draw an even bigger field for its epic 70-mile course from Stonehaven, over the Cairn o’ Mount – and back.
In addition to the “Redo” - which won praise from the more than 200 cyclists who took it on in last year’s inaugural event - will be a new “Undo” 52-miles still taking in the Cairn o’ Mount, but just once.
The Sportive will be held on Saturday, June 18, as part of the Midsummer Beer Happening, a hugely popular three-day celebration of beer, food, and music held in a purpose-built marquee in Stonehaven’s Baird park from Thursday, June 16.
Festival organiser Robert Lindsay said: “We are thrilled the Sportive is back, especially with both the ‘Redo’ and ‘Undo’ routes - the only thing not on the table for cyclists is a choice to ‘no do’.
“Both are brilliant courses over some of the most stunning scenery the Mearns has to offer - and, yes, it can be a real challenge.
“But these days, with cycling one of the fastest growing sports in the country, more and more cyclists are looking for bigger and better challenges.
“Well, here they are. Come and have go.”
Robert said riders had been clamouring for the event to return along with the Happening.
“They liked the fact that after working up a real sweat on the Sportive, they could join the hundreds of other people enjoying a cold beer and some fine food - along with great tunes – for a really mellow Saturday,” he said.
“And the ‘Undo’ straight back to Stonehaven is ideal for those wanting to get a beer in earlier.
“To add to the attraction, this year we will also be offering a handsome trophy for the winner to take home and treasure. And every rider will have a great T-shirt to help them remember their achievement.”
The Sportive focuses on enjoying the run and to ensure everyone does, the event offers a watering hole – with isotonic juice, water, energy bars and bananas – along with mechanical support and motorcycle back-up on the route and a broom wagon following the rear.
The event is being backed by both Stonehaven Cycling Club and Bike Remedy of Stonehaven.
Entry to the Sportive includes entry to the beer festival and entrants must be 18 or over.
Robert said: “Our first outing in our marquee in the Baird Park last year saw thousands of people flocking to the Happening last year and we expect to see just as many, if not more, this year.
“We will have more than 140 beers on offer from across the UK and Belgium, along with award-winning food from street vendors and some of the best musical talent the North-east has to offer.
“It’s Happening again... and it’s happening right here in Stonehaven. See you at midsummer.”
