A local hockey club raised more than £400 for club funds when they got on their bike and cycled the distance between Portlethen and Glasgow twice in 12 hours.

On Saturday January 19 the Aberdeenshire South Hockey Club took on the task at Asda Portlethen.

The challenge was to cycle in store the distance from the Portlethen store to the new home of hockey at Glasgow Green- which will be the venue for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014 - not once, but twice in 12 hours.

In a shift pattern the task was completed with 20 minutes to spare. Throughout the day a collection was made for club funds but also due to the partnership, money raised would also go towards Asda’s Tickled Pink Campaign.

Club Captain Iain Sawers explained that the total was more than expected and they were happy with the generosity of shoppers.

He said: “Following the count we were more than happy with the generosity of everyone who supported what we were trying to achieve and I am happy to say the total surpassed way beyond what was expected with a final total collected on the day of £414.35.

“We also thank all the help given by everyone from Asda and in particular Asda Portlethen Community Colleague Emily Teese.’
