FREAK weather across the whole of Aberdeenshire last week saw sand and soil storms strike with high winds causing havoc up and down the coast.

Stonehaven was one of the places affected, as can be seen in this stunning image of Stonehaven harbour in the midst of a storm taken last Monday by a Leader reader named Peter Grimm, from Inverbervie.

The soil is believed to have been blown off of the Bervie Braes, causing the ‘blizzard’ conditions at the harbour.

The strange weather is thought to have been caused by an exceptionally dry March causing the soil on the farmlands and braes to dry out, combined with strong 70mph winds which caused the soil to become airborne.

The storms received much attention on social media sites with Mr Grimm’s photograph being widely shared.
