Work to refurbish the interior of the old clock tower in Stonehaven’s High Street is set to begin, after a tender was accepted.
Aberdeenshire Council this week approved Muirfield Contracts Ltd as contractors to carry out the £100,000 facelift.
It is the second phase in the refurbishment of the historic landmark in the “Old Town”.
External refurbishment work was carried out in December, and it is thought the internal contract will help to make the building more accessible for all.
Very little maintenance of the tower has been carried out over the last 20 years, which resulted in decay to the roof timbers and balustrade and damage to the stonework with no public access and minimal interpretation.
Following an approach from the local community, a project has been put together to repair and refurbish the tower, open it up for all abilities access and provide enhanced interpretation of the building’s history and importance.
The latest phase was given approval by councillors at last week’s meeting of the Kincardine and Mearns area Committee.
