Two local businesses have added their support to the Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool to make sure the facility is looking its best for opening on Saturday, May 25.

Stonehaven’s Kirktown Garden Centre donated compost and topsoil for the garden area at the pool’s iconic Art Déco entrance.

Manager David Shiach was on hand to lend his support and expertise when the compost and topsoil were spread and dug in by volunteers from the Friends as well as from the Co-op in Stonehaven.

David will also be the pool’s gardening consultant from now on.

Chair of the Friends of the Pool, Mike Robins, said: “We are delighted that both Kirktown Garden Centre and the Co-op are supporting us in this way, which demonstrates the high regard which our local businesses and population have for the pool.

‘‘Now that we are a registered charity, we aim to attract more cash and in-kind sponsorship and also volunteers from local organisations and businesses.

‘‘The pool and garden certainly need additional care following the ravages of the winter storms, and work continues apace, inside and out, to make sure everything is ready for the Saturday opening.’’

Co-op volunteers Tom McMillan, Amanda Norton, Jacqui Wilson and Sonal Vyas were particularly welcome and really ‘mucked in’ with David and regular Friends volunteers Ann Allen, Carol Handley, Joan Fleming and Jenny Hunter to clear the mud and debris from the storms and spread and dig in the compost.

Appditional compost is also due to be provided by Aberdeenshire Council, with whom the Friends work in partnership to ensure the pool looks its best each season and provides a fantastic experience and fun for swimmers of all ages.

Mike added: “We are grateful for this support from the Co-op and Kirktown Garden Centre, and also from all the local businesses which sponsor us on a regular basis.”
