Children raise cash for good causes

Senior school pupils from across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire took part in the Jasmine Charity Challenge to help raise money for children’s charities throughout the UK.

The Jasmine Charity Challenge, which is in its second year, gives teams from local schools the opportunity to engage in enterprising activities by choosing a charity and identifying and putting into action ways to raise a minimum of £1,000 for the cause.

This year 84 pupils, along with help from hundreds of their fellow pupils, helped raise £40,000.

The eight schools which took part included Mearns Academy which supported Friends of Anchor. The pupils held fundraising events throughout 2011 and 2012, such as screening of The Muppets at Cineworld Union Square courtesy of Walt Disney Pictures and climbing Ben Nevis. Torry Academy held a sponsored balloon race which saw the winning balloon reaching the South of France.

Each of the 84 pupils who took part in the campaign was awarded a certificate signed by managing director of Jasmine Holdings, Danny Cowie.

Gordon Townson, who is the leading force behind the challenge, said: “It is just fantastic that the pupils managed to make so many links from the classroom to the workplace creating valuable career opportunities and raising such an incredible amount for charity in the process.

“Not only does the challenge aim to support many worthy charities, it gives pupils the chance to engage with other youngsters and encourages them to take responsibility and ownership of the challenge.

“This year has just blown us all away and we can’t wait to get started on next year’s challenge.”

The challenge was supported by a number of local companies including Jasmine Holdings, Finnies the Jeweller, Total E&P UK, Ace Winches, Scot Oil and Cineworld.

The Jasmine Charity Challenge is organised by Jasmine Holdings Limited. The group consists of a number of Aberdeen-based companies including office services, engineering solutions and property investment.

The group has recently invested in the development of The Barber’s Pole which now has eight shops across the city and suburbs, and fully integrated communications agency Citrus:Mix.

CSR has always been at the heart of Jasmine Holdings and the creation of The Jasmine Charity Challenge has allowed the group to build strong links with local charities, secondary schools and the North-east community as a whole.
