Stonehaven Chorus Spring concert on Sunday May 17 at St James’ church was a resounding success with conductor Ralph Jamieson.

Under Mr Jamieson the chorus performed A Solstice of Light by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.

The work tells the story of the succeeding waves of settlers in Orkney from the Stone Age to the present day and consists of a selection of pieces for choral voices interspersed with several solo organ settings.

The chorus once again proved their ability to perform challenging works with their wonderful rendition of this piece. They managed every difficult entry, sang with clarity of diction and conveyed the atmosphere of the poetry of the piece with their enthusiastic singing Accompanied on the organ by Kevin Bowyer, presently organist at Glasgow University and as a player of music of extreme technical complexities, his playing brought the composers gritty harmonies vibrantly to life

The young tenor soloist Timothy Coleman was amazing with a voice ideally suited to this piece which he performed with perfect accuracy and feeling.

The second half was very different, Opening with Brahms Alto Rhapsody with soloist Colette Ruddy, accompanied by Kevin Bowyer on piano and French Horn players Tom Blasdale and Kevin Cormack. Colette captured the emphatic music of the opening and blended superbly with the male voices of the choir

Four Brahms songs, sung in German, for the women’s chorus superbly accompanied by the two horn players and harpist Feargal McCarten allowed the ladies shine. The four part songs performed with great feeling and the harmonies evoking descriptive images of love and death,

The concert ended with Holst’s setting of the poem by Keats Ode On A Grecian Urn with a splendid performance by the chorus accompanied again by Kevin Bowyer on the organ and Colette Ruddy singing the final haunting words of the poem

The next concert is a joint one with the Sacramento Master Singers, who are on a singing tour of Scotland, on Sunday June 21 in St James Church at 7pm
