Colourful flower show

Visitors were treated to a colourful and varied display of all types of flora, as Stonehaven and District Horticultural Society held its annual Summer Flower Show at the weekend. The show was organised in conjunction with Stonehaven Floral Art Society.

Overall it was an excellent Show. There was a really good display in the vegetable classes and this was very good to see, with some past years having fairly low entries in these sections. Unfortunately the fruit exhibits were very thin on the ground this year, and possibly affected by the recent poor weather. Floral art displays were stunning as usual, with some striking flower works on themes such as “Royal Wedding”. Mrs A. Pyper’s creation for “Happy Birthday” was lovely and an interesting section of the Floral Art was a flower decorated shoe, which was delightful and a little different.

Flowers of course dominated the show and did not disappont. Mr Alexander McLaughlan’s fuchsias were superb and abundant with blooms, and Mabel Donald’s Streptacoccas and Coleus were simply beautiful.

At the prizegiving ceremony there was outstanding success for Mrs Mabel Donald who received a total of six awards for her stunning flowers. Amongst her many awards, Mrs Donald received the Mearns Leader Rose Bowl for achieving the highest number of points in the Show. Mrs Jill MacPhie presented the prizes.
