It wasn’t all good news from SUSTRANS this week as a bid for funding for a cycle track between Muchalls and Stonehaven parallel to the A90 did not receive Community Links funding.
The Mearns Leader first reported back in November that a project costing an estimated £400,000 could see the A90 ‘missing link’ at Bridge of Muchalls to Stonehaven cycle path come to fruition.
A facebook group was initially set up back in September 2013 to make the case for a cycle track because of the narrow path currently available.
This week, SUSTRANS told the Mearns Leader and Kincardineshire Observer that, owing to a “record highnumber of bids at a very high standard,’’ the cycle track bid missed out funding.
A spokesperson added: “The cycle track bid was fantastic but we simply can’t afford to fund them all.”
The news has been met with disappointment from North Kincardine councillor Ian Mollison.
He commented: “While I am very pleased about the good news for Portlethen, I am very disappointed that the link between Muchalls and Stonehaven has been turned down. This would a great boon for cyclists and walkers.
‘‘It leaves a missing link along the coast.”
