Dozens of pupils at Stonehaven’s Mackie Academy made a “Highland Charge” this week after fashioning their own battle shields.
More than 50 S1 pupils undertook the creative project as part of Curriculum For Excellence, designing and making a ‘‘targe’’ - a Highlander’s battle shield.
The targes have a traditional wood base and the front is dressed in synthetic leather which,in the case of Mackie Academy, featured the pupils’ own designs. A softer fabric was fixed to the inside along with support handles.
To complete the project, the pupils took part in a’Highland Charge’ last Wednesday, July 3, in their school playing fields ahead of the start of the summer holidays on Friday.
The school’s drama department was on hand to provide support in the form of pipers and drummers, and supply smoke and battle noises. Andy Thomson took the photos.
