Four badminton players from Stonehaven are to represent Scotland at the International School Sports Federation World Games in China.
The group from Mackie Academy will be attending the event at Taipei in May 2014.
A school spokesperson said: ‘‘This is a great honour for these athletes, but is just reward for their continued efforts and achievements over the past few seasons. Between them they have won national junior titles.
‘‘To realise their dream, the boys have committed to raising as much of the £12,000, target as possible and bag packing, a bingo night and a race night have already been arranged.
‘‘ They are also reaching out to local businesses for corporate sponsorship. They have also organised a sponsored cycle, in which the boys and four volunteers have agreed to cover the distance from Stonehaven to Taipei on two wheels - a staggering 5870 miles. This has also been seen as an opportunity to help support local charities.
‘‘In conjunction with Northsound’s Cash for Kids they are appealing to local schools and businesses to collect silver coins - 10p, 20p, 50p - to construct a silver “mile” to Taipei. An event will be scheduled where the children can come and help with the construction and meet Courage the Cat, the Cash for Kids mascot.’’
The Khyber Pass Association will co-ordinate the race night and the Stonehaven Sea Cadets will help with the bingo night. Any support they receive will be greatly appreciated, be it financial, a raffle prize or simply by supporting any of their events. See www.isfsports.org or contact Donna Agnew at Mackie Academy.
