A petition calling for a swimming pool has surfaced in Laurencekirk following an open day at the new Mearns Community Campus,
The petition, calling on Aberdeenshire Council to create the community facility, has so far received over 300 signatures.
It was started by Clare Ptaszek after visiting the new campus on Sunday, August 17.
In the petition, Clare states: “My family and I visited the new Mearns Academy at Laurencekirk and were pleasantly surprised at the community emphasis around the campus.
“A brand new state of the art gym/fitness suite has been installed for people over 16 to use as well as a full size outdoor artifical pitch and two grass pitches to use. The only thing lacking is the much debated swimming pool.
“I understand there is space allocated for a swimming pool but, currently, the lack of funds is stopping the pool from being built and I urge Aberdeenshire Council to change their mind for the benefit of the whole community. Sometimes overspending can be a good thing.
“Mearns Academy pupils, as well as local primaries, would be able to use the pool during the school day and give children regular access to swimming lessons as part of the curriculum.
“During the evenings, weekends and school holidays the whole community would be able to access the pool too.”
Many who have signed the petition commented, saying that the Mearns community would benefit from a pool.
One stated: “I am a resident in Laurencekirk and a swimming pool is the only thing this community is lacking. Waiting lists for lessons are horrendous everywhere, a swimming pool in Laurencekirk would benefit a huge amount of villages in the surrounding areas.”
