Elsick consultation imminent

Further public consultation for the planned £1bn 4,000-home Chapelton of Elsick development will take place later this month.

The new community is planned on farmland to the west of Newtonhill, ten miles south of Aberdeen.

Members of the public are invited to attend a second exhibition at the Cookney Village Hall from 10am to 8pm on Thursday 30 June and from 9am to 4pm on Friday July 1.

the public will be able to view and comment on the latest designs for the new settlement, which includes primary schools, a secondary school, leisure and community facilities, retail and business facilities.

Results from recent ecological, agricultural and environmental surveys will be on display. The variety of housetypes and landscaping plans will be demonstrated alongside road designs as the masterplan moves towards planning submission.

Lord Southesk, director of Elsick Development Company Ltd, representing the landowners, said: “The community has already been involved in every stage of the development of Chapelton. Over 300 people attended a ten-day ‘Charrette’ last September, during which they worked with a world-class design team to develop the masterplan.

“Two further exhibitions at Cookney in March and Making it Real at Newtonhill earlier this month attracted over 570 visitors to see the developing plans. We collected valuable feedback on our earlier designs at these events, including the need for bungalows and an endorsement of largely traditional housetypes.

“The exhibition is an opportunity for people to get involved in creating a new, sustainable style of living. The masterplan is being developed by Andres Duany, the world renowned pioneer of new urbanism, a movement which aims to build walkable, mixed use towns with a focus on building communities. With 40% green space, a town centre and excellent transport links we are looking to recreate the lifestyle of traditional Scottish towns.”

Four architectural firms are developing the site which will include a mix of house styles and prices, including affordable housing.
