Empty shops

MSP, Nigel Don, has welcomed the announcement by the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, John Swinney, that the Government is to take steps to tackle the issue of empty High Street shops.

Unveiling the Scottish Government’s Spending Review and draft Budget Mr Swinney revealed plans for legislation to reform empty property relief and incentivise bringing vacant premises back into use from April 2013 with a view to supporting urban regeneration.

Mr Don said: “The issue of empty High Street shops is one which affects most towns and I am delighted John Swinney recognises the problem. The measures announced aren’t a magic wand but they are a step in the right direction as we seek to re-invigorate our town centres.”
