UPDATE: Barclay Street is now open

A section of one of Stonehaven’s busiest roads has been cordoned off by police after a fire broke out in a nightclub last night.

Firefighters were called to Zee’s nightclub on Barclay Street in the town at about 11.15pm on Sunday, July 24.

Two fire crews from Stonehaven; one from Inverbervie; one from Laurencekirk and one from Aberdeen were called to the site as well as an incident support van from Peterhead.

There will be a joint investigation into the cause by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland.

By 12:30am fir crews had successfully tackled the blaze and the last fire vehicle left the scene at 3am

The section of the street is still cordoned off with one police car in attendance as fire Fire Scotland investigators arrive.

Stagecoach is having to alter bus routes to accommodate for the road closure: the stop at Rodney Street is being used as an alternative.

A Fire Scotland spokesperson said that explosions were heard at the site: “Initially the callers were phoning to say there had been an explosion and the building was heavily smoked.”

No injuries as a result of the fire have been reported.
