Great North Run by the Newell family

Last Sunday, three of the late Susan Newell’s family were among almost 40,000 runners taking part in the Great North Run in the North East of England. See picture left.

They were running in memory of their Mum and also to raise funds for Bowel Cancer Care as Susan died in 2011 after suffering with bowel cancer for nearly two years.

Youngest son Tom decided during the summer after her death he wanted to raise some money in memory of his mum and contacted Bowel Cancer Care to see if they would get him an entry in the Great North Run 2011. This they did and he eventually ran and raised well over a £1000. Unfortunately no-one else from the family was able to run and his only supporter was his big brother Ben who went down to cheer him on.

Move forward one year and Tom once again wanted to raise more money and his brother Ben and sister Milissa said they wanted to run as well.

Training went well, though all came to the line nursing dodgy knees and ankles and in Tom’s case a fall from his bike just a few days before the race.

Susan’s husband Peter provided transport and was there to support his three children on the run along with his two granddaughters.

The fourth member of the family Joanne is not a runner but she did help in raising sponsorship and fully supported her brothers and sister.

On race day friends and family congregated at Hewarth roundabout at the four-mile mark to cheer the Newell family on.

They were rewarded with all three arriving on schedule for a brief reunion and pictures amongst the huge throng of runners raising funds for their own charities.

Peter and his granddaughters and Tom’s partner Marion then tackled the trip to South Shields to see them arrive back with a planned meet up at the Bowel Cancer Care tent.

There were great scenes of celebration at the end of the race when the runners and family met up and proceeded to almost take over the Bowel Cancer Care tent with their celebrations where they were well looked after by Danni and Marianne and the other helpers.

In all it was a wonderful day and thanks go to Bowel cancer Care for the entries and a chance to raise funds for such a worthy cause which the family identify with so well.

Peter said, on behalf of the family that he was grateful to all the friends and colleagues who have donated money and the total raised so far is nearly £1400. If you have not donated and wish to do so you still have time in the next few weeks so go to the giving site at www.justgiving.com/newellfamily and donate just a bit more.
