A community initiative that aims to improve the general look of Stonehaven has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week.

In the wake of extensive media coverage, Stonehaven Town Partnership have spoken to the Mearns Leader about the initiative behind the now infamous letters sent out to some Stonehaven businesses last week.

As you will have read on our front page story (continued on page 2), among those to receive letters were the Carron chipper, who were asked to remove a banner advertising them as the birthplace of the deep fried mars bar, and the Bay Fish and Chips, who were asked to remove stickers from picnic tables outside the shop.

Wynn Edwards from the Stonehaven Town Partnership (STP) contacted the Leader to explain that the letters were part of a group initiative involving Aberdeenshire Council, STP, Community Council, Business Association and the Horizon group, where members have identified certain areas in need of tidying up in the town. 85 letters were sent out in all.

Wynn said: “There is nothing wrong with the banner at the Carron, we are not sure how it got included in the list but I think it may have been included inadvertently. As with all of our initiatives and projects we are happy to speak to anyone with issues.”
