Andrew Griffiths who is currently Head of Primary Education and Curriculum Development at Aberdeenshire Council will be acting as Joint Head of Education for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire on a six-month interim basis from December 1, 2015.

Andrew said: “I look forward to leading on educational developments on a number of fronts and building on the outstanding work that takes place already across both authorities.

“The main focus of the role will be to develop the curriculum, raise attainment and lead on joint approaches in key projects such as employment opportunities for young people, which we all strive to enhance.”

Mr Griffiths was previously head teacher at Mackie Academy in Stonehaven and the Gordon Schools in Huntly before becoming Head of Education in Aberdeenshire responsible for Primary Schools and Curriculum for Excellence.

Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education Learning and Leisure Committee Councillor Alison Evison said: “This interim appointment is about bringing benefits to young people in our area through sharing knowledge and resources.

“Education teams across both authorities will be able to collaborate to improve learning and teaching as well as raise attainment.”

Convener of Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee Councillor Angela Taylor said: “I welcome this news and am sure that Mr Griffiths will bring a wealth of experience during this time and continue to provide leadership and direction to teams across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

“By working in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council we have a real opportunity to improve education for young people across the area and I look forward to working together during this six month period.”
