To celebrate the first open season of the Lifeboat House in Johnshaven, they are taking part in the Museums Galleries Scotland Festival event.

Local councillor Bill Howatson will officially open the venue on Saturday May 16 and there will be an exciting programme of events from 12pm till 4pm on the day.

Planned activities include music from Lathallan Pipe Band and Stonekist Folk Band, a wildlife photography exhibition, traditional net-making demonstrations, local history talks and a kite making craft activity for the little ones.

There will also be a photography competition for all those budding photographers out there. On a wildlife theme, photographs can feature anything from spiders to spring bunnies! Categories are 6-12 years and 12-16 years old, and can be submitted on the day. There’s a prize for every entry.

Learn more about the project and the work of the Benholm and Johnshaven Heritage Society with local history talks on both the railway and the history of the local fishing industry.

There will be refreshments served between 1-3pm.

The project began after the society was gifted the Lifeboat House in order to store and display a growing collection of photographs and artefacts relating to Johnshaven and Benholm. The project was realised after significant grants were awarded from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Aberdeenshire European Fisheries Fund. It is hoped the venue will not only provide a place for people to come and enjoy this rich heritage but also an exciting hub for talks, performance, art shows and much more.

If you would like to be involved in this project, the Lifeboat House would love to hear from you. We are looking for volunteers to be involved in all aspects of running the heritage hub. Or, if you have memories of life in the Johnshaven and Benholm area which you would be happy to share they would be delighted for you to get in touch.

They gratefully acknowledge our funders: Heritage Lottery Fund, Aberdeenshire European Fisheries Fund, Eneco, Aberdeenshire Council and Voluntary Arts Week.
