THIRTEEN-year-old Anna Simpson wonders which of the mouth-watering recipes in the Johnshaven Recipe Book to have a go at first.

Recipes, Recipes, Recipes. From the kitchens of Johnshaven but for the enjoyment of all, the Johnshaven Community Café Group has just produced a book of delightful recipes, the favourites of some of Johnshaven’s notable cooks and bakers.

There has long been a feeling in the village of a need for a café where locals and visitors can drop in and have a chat over a cup of tea and a scone and cake and late last year the Johnshaven Community Café Group was formed with the aim of satisfying that need.

Finding a suitable location was something of a problem though, until, in June this year the Benholm and Johnshaven Heritage Society agreed in principle with the concept of establishing the café alongside the heritage displays in the Society’s Lifeboat House.

It goes without saying that there is a lot of work to be done and money to be found before the concept of a heritage centre/community café comes to fruition.

Recently, however, the Heritage Society received the necessary planning approvals for alterations to the Lifeboat House and the production of the recipe book is part of the Community Café Group’s fund-raising efforts.

“Recipes from the Kitchens of Johnshaven” is beautifully produced and illustrated and, sprinkled with humour, is an invitation to try out twenty one mouth-watering cosmopolitan recipes including meat, fish, cheese, Asian and vegetarian dishes.

The book costs £4, or three for £10, is available from Johnshaven Stores, Starfish Studio, Ship Hotel, Oydsee Hair Design and Wairds Park reception and would make an excellent Christmas present for family and friends at home and abroad.
