Alison Evison, Scottish Labour’s candidate for North Kincardine, has written to the Chief Executive of Aberdeenshire Council expressing her disapproval of the Council’s attempt to make it harder to ask questions of the political administration.
The change would mean that Councillors would be required to take all reasonable steps to have their questions answered privately before they could raise the matter publicly. The unelected Chief Executive would determine whether this process had been completed adequately.
“This is a real threat to local democracy and accountability. It would cut the Council off from the residents in the area and would inevitably lead to the Council becoming nothing more than a voice piece for the political administration. I am particularly concerned that issues such as school provision in Portlethen would be brushed aside if local government became less open.”
