EXAMINATION of the salmon killed in last month's poisoning of the River Cowie in Stonehaven has revealed traces of the lethal substance "Cymag" in the dead fish.
Around 60 salmon, weighing between four and 22lbs, are now thought to have perished in the pollution.
Carcasses analysed by the Fisheries Laboratories at Pitlochery were found to contain fatal quantities of the cyanide-derived poison in their gills.
Stonehaven and District Angling Association President, Mr Sandy Durward, said this week that whoever dumped the substance into the water probably did not know what they were doing, as the sheer amount of "Cymag" in the fishes gills indicated that the person was inexperienced in the effects of the poison, and unlikely to have been poaching.

"WE have had a wonderful time, and the people have been so kind that we are definitely coming back." These were the farewell words of James Stewart, the American film star, at the end of his six-day shooting holiday in the Mearns.
Stewart, who was accompanied by his wife, Gloria, and three friends- Mr and Mrs Kirk Johnston and their son from Texas- arrived in Stonehaven last Thursday and stayed at the Bay hotel until Sunday. On Thursday forenoon, Mr Stewart, who is 61, and his party went shopping in Aberdeen, and in the afternoon they enjoyed a brief shoot on the moors with Mr William Emslie, solicitor and town clerk of Banchory.
Rain and hail showers greeted the star when he went shooting in the vicinity of Tilbouries on Wednesday. "Considering the strong winds and the newness of the country to us, my wife and I really did quite well, I suppose, but I'm afraid most of the birds we saw are still flying," he said afterwards.

THE very complete ambulance provided for the town by Mrs James Mowat was put into use for the first time in conveying a lady suffering from appendicitis to the railway station. On arrival at the station the patient on the stretcher was placed in the train, and at Aberdeen Station the stretcher was placed in the Infirmary ambulance, so that the patient was not shifted till she reached the Infirmary.

SINCE the alterations on the lavatory at the town hall, a rather strong smell permeates the lobby as one enters form the street. This should be looked into by the Hall Committee, and might be greatly abated by at least making the door from the lobby a swing one, so that it would close automatically.
