STONEHAVEN'S new £650,000- plus sports/leisure centre at Queen Elizabeth Park got off to a "flying start" on Monday, when its doors were opened to the public for the first time – a week earlier than originally planned, so that schoolchildren, in the main, could enjoy the facilities during their Easter holiday break.
Some youngsters arrived an hour and more before the 10am opening, and there were over 40 in the queue when the big moment arrived.
Not surprisingly, the indoor pool was the most popular attraction, and there were occasions throughout the day when it was being used to virtually its full capacity, with between 50 and 60 bathers enjoying the new provision.
Table tennis equipment was not received until mid-afternoon, but was made available from Tuesday onwards. Centre manager Me Jim Robb said later that it had been a "very successful" first day and he made the point that the centre had given the youngsters something to do during a school holiday that they had never had before. "Now they have somewhere to go," he said.

THERE is no guarantee as to exactly how and where the Cowie river will be entering the sea as this note is being written. It must surely be one of the most fickle estuaries around our coast, and at the end of last week was following a most unusual route- even for the Cowie.
Turning sharp right at "Turner's Corner," it flowed southwards, close to the property line, almost as far as Ironfield Lane. There it turned back on its tracks to the groin at the end of the promenade and entered the sea through a narrow channel which was partly underneath the worn concrete of the pier.
Inside the "loop" thus formed, there was a substantial bank of shingle and plenty of beach too, between the outside arm and the sea.

THE body of a man was found in the sea at Strathlethen Bay, near Dunnottar Castle on Tuesday. It was entirely nude, except that there were boots and stockings on the feet.
It is supposed to be that of a seaman named Wright, who was lost off the ship Fingal near Bervie on 12th February last, when that vessel was going from Stonehaven to Sunderland. Wright resided in Maud's Lane, Sunderland. The boots and stockings were retained for identification, and the body was buried yesterday.

A SPECIAL effort is being put forth at the present time to increase the numbers of the local company of the Territorial Force. A public meeting for that purpose is to be held at the Drill Hall to-morrow, at which the advantages of being connected with the corps will be set forth.
It is said that within the last fortnight something like twenty recruits have joined the company, so that there is a possibility that the company may soon be at its full strength.
