PRE-CHRISTMAS Sunday shopping is being "tried out" for the first time in Stonehaven this year, with the majority of businesses in the town opening for mainly afternoon trading on Sunday first, December 16 and again on December 23.

The facility being offered to those whose work may prevent them from otherwise obtaining gifts, etc., during weekdays is in line with the trend at a number of other communities throughout Scotland, where the move had proved both welcome to the customer, and successful for traders.

SIX young men from Kincardineshire coastal communities, four from Gourdon and two from Inverbervie, literally "took the plunge" on Sunday- from around 2,000 ft up!

For the first time in their lives, and after only a few hours basic tuition, they made their first ever parachute descent high above Angus, and floated gracefully to earth at Kinnell Airfield, Friockheim.

They all landed safely, and later rejoiced in the face that tier exploit had raised a sum of at least 700 for Cancer Relief.

QUEEN Elizabeth , The Queen Mother, has sent a donation of 10 towards the Stonehaven Tollbooth Restoration Fund. It came in a letter to Provost Christie from Mr Arthur Penn, the Queen Mother's Treasurer, who wrote:

"At the desire of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, I now send you a cheque for 10, being a contribution from Her Majesty to the fund which you are raising for the restoration of this ancient building.

"Her Majesty learns of its past history with great interest, and has read with much satisfaction that the local efforts under your leadership and persistence are being applied to the preservation of a feature of your town which evidently deserves a wide measure of local support."

THERE was an amusing exchange between several MP's while the Scottish Grand Committee was debating the Occupiers' Liability (Scotland) Bill.

Sir Colin Thornton-Kemsley, Liberal Unionist Member for North Angus and Mearns, said that in the early days of the war he had an unfortunate experience that could have been more unfortunate than it was.

In his capacity, as a staff officer on the Q side, he had to visit a command supply depot in Fife. He was passing under a 14 foot stack composed of one-cwt. crates containing meat when some careless soldiers, who he thought must certainly have been disgruntled constituents, allowed one of the crates to fall on his head.

ONE of the worst storms that has taken place for several years raged along the coast on Friday, causing considerable mischief to the promenade and the South Pier at the harbour. Since the completion of the new breakwater the fishing boats have been greatly protected, but on Friday night huge waves dashed over the breakwater, causing some more of the boats to break away from their moorings, and seriously imperilling their safety. On one of the boats a heavy sea threw one of the crew into the hold, and another would have been swept into the sea but was fortunately able to hold on to the halyards.
