REPAIR work to Inverbervie Burgh Hall is to receive £500 financial assistance from Kincardine and Deeside District Council.

Meeting on Thursday the policy and resources committee agreed to give a 50 per cent grant towards half the cost of fixing a leaky store roof, fitting new shelves and redecorating the stage dressing, as well as other more minor repairs. A sale of work organised by the hall's management committee earlier this year raised 458, which will go towards paying a final bill of 1003.

ON Tuesday night it was the turn of the older generation to show that they know how to enjoy themselves, when the OAP Association held their annual Christmas dinner/dance in the Johnshaven Village Hall. Music for dancing was performed by Sandy and Phyllis Blackhall and Donald Bruce sang to his own guitar accompaniment. Local artists also contributed solos throughout the evening,

AN electricity cut in various parts of the Mearns on Friday night plunged many homes into darkness around tea-time, and caused a hurried search for candles in shops as well as houses.

A spell of off-on-off lighting in Stonehaven was followed by a 15 minute blackout, and Christmas shoppers bought their gifts by candlelight.

One shopkeeper in Market Square had a car driven close up to his window to light his shop with its headlights. In another the counter was lit by one of the torches which, a few minutes earlier, had been displayed there for sale.

WHEN Lord Stonehaven travelled to London last week his train was only five minutes late. He therefore struck his head in the cab of the engine and said to the driver: "A jolly good run."

He told the House of Lords about it during last Thursday's debate on the modernisation of the railways, and added: "Travellers should do that sort of thing more often. I say this knowing the difficulties these chaps have, and what they are putting up with.

"I also pay tribute to the forbearance of the unions and the statesmanlike way in which they have borne their tribulations."

MR Peter Ferguson, who has been stationmaster at Craigo for the past 20 years, was honoured last Wednesday night on leaving the village to become stationmaster at Eassie.

Mr James Scott, Mains of Gallery, presented him with a wallet and notes.

ON SATURDAY the children attending the Netherley Sunday School were entertained to tea by their teachers Misses Macdonald and Wyllie. After tea some pleasant hours were spent in games and dancing. Before leaving each child received an apple and an orange. Hearty cheers were given by the children in recognition of their teachers' kindness.

SUNDAY promises to be a big musical day in Stonehaven, as all the churches are to give special services of praise befitting the Christmas Season, and in addition Madam Levante's fine orchestra is to give sacred concerts afternoon and evening in the Town Hall.
