THIRTY Stonehaven senior citizens received an unexpected Christmas treat thanks to six regulars at the town's New Mill Inn Hotel and "mine host" Crawford Rae.

It all began in October, when it was suggested to the six lads concerned that they should contribute to a "cuss box" every time they let slip a mild epithet!

Subsequently they decided to each make a minimum donation every week with a view to giving a party of O.A.P's a festive night out, and when the cash was tallied up, it amounted to 135.

The guests had a grand old time and in appreciation of his customers' caring gesture, Crawford Rae, a talented amateur artists, presented them with appropriate pictures as a memento of the occasion.

SUSPECTED forged 20 notes passed in two Stonehaven premises turned out to be the "real thing" after examination by a local bank. A police spokesman said that a new 20 note had come into circulation "and a lot of people think they are forgeries when, in fact, they are quite genuine."

CHRISTMAS Day dawned bright and clear in Stonehaven and, until late in the afternoon, would have passed for a day in early March. The town itself was very quiet, all offices and shops being closed, and it was evident that the custom of "dining out" on Christmas Day is gaining ground. Hotel reported good business at lunchtime as well as in the evening.

ON New Year's Day the shortest, tallest, youngest and oldest brides married in St Cyrus Parish Church during 1959 will each receive a dowry of just over 8.

The dowries are paid annually from a bequest of 1000 made 111 years ago by the late Mr John Orr, laird of Bridgetown, St Cyrus, a former Paymaster General of the Forces of India. There were six claimants this year.

SUNDAY night's service in Laurencekirk West Church was the last to be held there. In 1954 the East and West churches were united the arrangement being that services would be held in each building on alternate Sundays, but owing to increased costs in maintenance both churches, the united congregation decided recently to close the west church. When asked what use the West Church would be put to, Mr Fraser, minister of the united charge, was non-committal. "That will be a matter for the congregation to decide," he said.

TO the surprise of many of the town's people the Town's Band marched through the burgh on Christmas Day, under the direction of Mr Bremner, their band master. In spite of the ice, making it difficult to play their instruments and watch their footing at the same time, the band got along all right, and their playing was much enjoyed, the improvement in that respect being much commented on.
