25 YEARS AGO - FRIDAY, JANUARY 11 1985

RAT of the week nomination must surely go to the person (or persons) who broke in to the Sheperd's Hall in Stonehaven's "auld toon" and stole – of all things- around £100 worth of Lego bricks and toy cars belonging to the playgroup based there.

Understandably, the kiddies are pretty upset, so too are the mums and officials who supervise them.

In the hope that the situation can swiftly be rectified, Playgroup supervisor Mrs Gillian Allan has issued an appeal to local folk who may have Lego/toy cars they no longer need, to donate them so the youngsters can continue to enjoy the "diversion" these items provide.

MANY Stonehaven folk will recall the stalwart Nigerian student, who "borrowed" a fireball in the early hours of 1959 and marched up the High Street swinging it with one hand as to the manner born.

At that time he was on a refresher course in this country and was in Aberdeen under the auspices of the British Council. This week Stonehaven Town Council learned that he is now Finance Minister of Nigeria.

It was officially announced on Thursday that the disused RAF aerodrome at Edzell is to be taken over by the US Navy, who will use it to provide a new unit in the radio network of their communications system.

The airfield will not at first be used for flying, but later flight logistic aircraft may operate on duties linked with naval communications.

Edzell will become what is known in this country as a signals station. It will not be primarily a transmitting organisation, but will be equipped with the necessary facilities to help complete the US Navy communications network in the European area.

QUITE a large crowd gathered at the beach in Stonehaven to witness the waves playing their usual winter game with the promenade there. During the forenoon the wind had increased in force and stirred up huge waves. Fortunately the tide was not so high as it was in the early morning so that no additional damage was done to the promenade.
