WORK on Portlethen's new £4million Academy was officially inaugurated yesterday (Thursday), when Grampian Region's Convener, Councillor John Sorrie, laid the first concrete at the Bruntland Road site.

The 750 pupil school will be the last brand-new secondary school to be built in Grampian in the foreseeable future, and will also be the most expensive single project ever undertaken by the educational authority. It is expected to be completed by the autumn next year.

SOON, the Stonehaven Community Centre will take on a "new look", two rooms are currently being completely redecorated. And once it has been cleaned, carpeting from the former Handyman Centre – obtained as a result of a successful bid by the District Council – will be laid in the coffee bar, lounge, reception area and corridors.

THOSE out early on roads in Kincardineshire had a pretty sticky time when severe blizzards hit the area. Bus services were maintained, but only just. The railways were having their troubles too, due mainly to Telegraph poles and wires being down. Several trains were combined to run a skeleton service.

Among the "victims" of the rail delays was Stonehaven's former provost , Mr Hugh Ramsay. Returning from Perth, the left the Fair City at 7pm on Tuesday, and reached Stonehaven at 9am on Wednesday, a rather uncomfortable night having been spent in the train at Forfar.

Electricity supplies took a battering too, and there was some disruption of current. Lights in the Stonehaven area kept flickering on and off, and some of the outlying areas had longer stoppages.

Several county policemen made an effort to emulate Dr Barbara Moore's walking prowess. Due to give evidence at Sheriff Courts and finding the roads hopeless for motoring two set out to walk from Montrose to Forfar, one from Brechin to Forfar and one from Edzell to Stonehaven.

SIR Alexander Baird has, with his usual kindness, caused to be distributed a supply of English coals to the needy in Fetteresso parish of the burgh of Stonehaven; and also the usual supply to the land of Rickarton. At the New Year the servants and others on the estate of Urie had delivered at their own homes their annual Christmas treat. It is pleasing to find that although the state of his heath forces Alexander to take up his temporary residence in a warmer climate, his thoughtfulness for and interest in all that relates to Stonehaven is shown in acts such as the above.

THE second of a course of lectures on "Manures" under the auspices of the Aberdeen and North Scotland College of Agriculture, was delivered in the Public School in St Cyrus. There was a large attendance. The lecturer dealt fully with the composition of farmyard manure and the application of lime. At the close an interesting discussion took place.
