25 YEARS AGO - FRIDAY JANUARY 25 1985

ONE of Stonehaven's best known "landmarks", the former Carron Restaurant (referred to by townspeople as the "tearooms"), could become nothing but a nostalgic memory for local folk and long-time holidaymakers, before the year is out.

The Cameron Street building, used since its closure many years ago as a storage area for Norco's Evan Street supermarket and associated adjacent retail outlets, may become the victim on the "march of time" and the present day cut throat competitiveness for custom which has become a feature of the provisions trade.

A warrant authorising the demolition of the building has been issued to the "Co-opie" by Kincardine/Deeside District Council's planning and building control committee.

However a Norco spokesman said this week that nothing had yet been definitely decided about the former restaurant's future.

STONEHAVEN'S Carronhill School to a very large extent and Forest View Centre to a somewhat lesser degree face a demanding fund-raising challenge over the next few weeks in order to finance the sending of five of their number, and escorting teachers, to a "special" Special Olympics in the Isle of Man this year.

Friday January 29 1960

YOU have no doubt all heard of the expression "letting one's hair down." Well, that can well and truly be said of the 20 members and friends of the Stonehaven Badminton Club who held, of all things, a "Haggis Tournament" at the Beach Pavilion in honour of our national bard.

Two outsize "chieftains o' the puddin' race," specially made, disappeared as if by magic, together with the appropriate quantities of bashed neeps and tatties- a splendid repast which was accompanied by suitable refreshments and music of varying tempos from a record playing pick up.

And through all this the games of badminton waxed fast and furious, although towards the end of the evening some unorthodox methods were used to propel the shuttlecock across the net!

A HAND of 20 eager helpers, armed with buckets, brooms and other cleaning gear, appeared at the reconditioned Gourdon Town Hall on Tuesday night in answer to a call for helpers to get the hall ready for the pensioners' party on Saturday.

They made an "all out attack" on the main hall and left it spic-and-span.

Thursday January 27 1910

ON Friday last, the new Drake's Comet was observed by a number of people in the neighbourhood of Stonehaven. Mr Connon, farmer, Elfhill, and Mr Gordon, shepherd, had a very fine view of it. On Saturday night the Rev Mr Innes gave some of the people of the village of Cowie an opportunity of seeing it through a fine glass. It was again visible for a time ion Tuesday night, but has lost a good deal of its brilliancy of last week.

THE polling on Saturday passed off very quietly notwithstanding the fact that there was good deal of snow on the ground. But later on a most cowardly snowball attack was made on some gentlemen, one of whom ran for shelter while the other stood the full blunt of the fusillade, his hat being several times knocked off. A lady pluckily came to the rescue, followed by the police, and the party got away.
