PINT sized Joanna McDonald has swum her way into local history books with a record breaking two mile course south to north across Stonehaven Bay.

Joanna, a member of the Stonehaven Otters Swimming Club, is only 10 and has become the youngest person to swim from Downie Point to Carron Point under the watchful eye her dad Hamish, manager is RGIT's Offshore Maritime Rescue Section at the harbour.

Wearing "dry" suits the pair made the historic crossing in one and a half hours, thus realising Joanna's first big ambition for which she had been preparing over the past month.

WORK is going on round the clock on the laying of Stonehaven's long sea sewage outfall and the 24 hour operations are giving rise to strange noises from the bay.

"There have been a few inquiries about the noise since the contractor started work last week," said a water services department spokesman.

"The noise is caused by the necessary drilling in the bay to lay a track I the rock for the outfall pipeline and we are hoping that local people will be prepared to put up with the inconvenience for three weeks."

He added that he hoped Stonehaven people would "thole" it in the knowledge that it was an "unavoidable part" of providing the town with a modern sewage system.

THE proprietors of Glenury Distillery are to consult a surveyor regarding the cost of piping the effluent from the Distillery direct into the sea.

This was stated at a special meeting of Stonehaven Town Council when Provost T Christie reported on a meeting with a representative of the firm. "Every member is aware of the horrible stench when has been coming from the Cowie in recent weeks," the Provost said.

It was stated that the distillery had now ceased operations for the summer, and that a period of rain should alleviate the nuisance a little.

FISHING off Garron Point the local motor yawl "Mary Gowans" (skipper Mr J Watt) fished up the name plate of a boat in its seine net. The plate bore the name "Matador" and has been handed to the appropriate authorities. Nothing is known locally of the loss of a craft of that name although it is known that a wreck lies in the vicinity of the find.

He is now a leading official of the Canadian Government, and is returning to the Hague, Holland, where he has been taking part in the International Fisheries Arbitration. He has still a warm spot in his heart for "Stanehive."
