25 YEARS AGO - FRIDAY MARCH 15 1985

TIME obviously "flew" at the Commodore Hotel last weekend, when around 60 clock cards used by staff to record their hours worked sprouted wings and disappeared into the night.

Either late on Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday morning a "mean" thief decided on the spur of the moment to grab the cards, instantly relieving the employees of their work records for the week.

One kitchen member of staff commented: "We have been put to the inconvenience of trying to sort out hours worked."

Hotel general manager Mr Andy Bremmer told the Leader that the theft has not been reported to Stonehaven Police and called the incident "more annoying than anything else."

STONEHAVEN resident Mrs Rosa Smith celebrated her 100th birthday quietly on Saturday with her son William and her three grandchildren.

Mrs Smith moved form her native Ellon to Stonehaven 80 years ago to work as a servant at Mains of Cowie and marries Mr William B Smith, a draper at Perter Christie's, who died nine years ago.

An iced cake in the form of an open book took pride of place at the family's celebrations, along with many messages of good wishes.

50 YEARS AGO - Friday March 18 1960

A SMALL landslide occurred at Bervie Braes on Tuesday, but there was no disruption to traffic. A part of the bank on the south side of the trunk road, about 50 yards west of the entrance to Bogwell Road, gave way, but happily was arrested by a shelf a few yards above road level.

Only a small amount spilled on to the carriageway, and that was soon cleared up by county workmen.

STONEHAVEN has been fortunate this winter in that the White Heather Group have included it twice in their itinerary. When this popular company, familiar to TV and radio fans, were here in October they delighted two large audiences and now they are here again to put on a couple of shows for us and will doubtless again draw the crowds.

100 YEARS AGO - Friday 17 March 1910

REGARDING our band, a correspondent points out that the visitors as well as natives would appreciate it more if the pipe band filled up the time between pieces by playing selections.

He says that to many of our visitors, the bagpipes are an object of greater rarity and interest than a brass band, and they would add greatly to the entertainment of the visitors.

There is no doubt a good deal of truth in the writer's remarks, but there are difficulties of a financial kind which would have to be got over as the brass band members are allowed a small honorarium for their services, and it is not likely the pipers would turn out unless they were placed on the same footing.
